How to edit an .md file on Android

You might want to fix a typo in a README, add a line to your notes, or clean up an AI answer. You can make these small edits on your phone without the app quietly changing the rest of your file.

Steps

  1. Open the .md file in PilcrowMD. You see the formatted page.
  2. Tap the </> (Editor) button at the top left to see the Markdown source.
  3. Make your change. Line numbers and colours help you find your place. You can use undo and redo if you make a mistake.
  4. Tap the Save icon (floppy disk) in the top bar.
  5. Tap the eye (Reader) button to check the result.

Want to start in the editor every time? Turn on Open in edit mode in Settings (the gear on the welcome screen).

Your file stays your file

Many editors rewrite the whole file when they save. They change line endings, spacing, or list symbols you never touched. PilcrowMD writes back exactly what you typed:

Start a new file

Tap Create MD File on the welcome screen. It opens straight in the editor.

Common questions

Can I save a copy instead of changing the original? Yes. Use Save a copy in the ⋮ menu at the top right.

Does editing need internet? No. Everything happens on the phone.

Can I edit .txt files too? Yes. PilcrowMD opens .md, .markdown, and .txt files.
